Pinky’s Up! 🫖 Five Places to Find Afternoon Tea In and Around Hamilton, ON
With the closure of many of our beloved Hamilton tea rooms over the Covid years, it can sometimes prove difficult to find proper Afternoon Tea within the city. But fear not! Forking Delicious is here to share some of our favourite places to enjoy afternoon tea in and around the city.
If you aren’t yet aware, afternoon tea is not “just” a cup of tea in the afternoon; it is a full-three tiered meal with very specific requirements and a history dating back to the 1800s. Essentials in afternoon tea are: a savoury level with finger sandwiches, a scone level with jam and clotted cream, and a sweet level with mini desserts and petit fours.
☕ Teahouse at the Turner Pavilion, Royal Botanical Gardens Surrounded by the rose gardens of Henrie Park, the Teahouse at the RBG has been newly renovated and makes for not only a beautiful place for afternoon tea, but also for a stroll through the gardens. You can enjoy the full afternoon tea experience (including an afternoon tea for vegetarians), or lunch options like sandwiches and salads. Special mentions: their Coronation chicken and their scones with whipped honey butter / lemon. Access to Hendrie Park through RBG Centre, 680 Plains Rd W, Burlington, ON L7T 4H4
☕ Tea at the White House One of Hamilton’s most beloved tea rooms, Tea at the White House in Waterdown may have switched locations, but the traditions and quality live on! Tea at the White House does afternoon tea right, with an elegant space, warm service and decadent food options. Reservations are highly recommended as they are quite popular. Special mentions: their 250 varieties of loose leaf tea and house made jam with their famous scones. 35 Main St N #1, Waterdown, ON L0R 2H0
☕ Abigail’s Tea House Abigail’s Tea House in St. George takes traditional afternoon tea and puts a modern spin on it. You can expect to enjoy all of the ‘must-haves’ of afternoon tea, but with the Abigail team’s creative twist. Once you see the colourful, fun decor of Abigail’s, you’ll know you are in for something good. Their food menu is equal parts delicious and beautiful. They also have themes for different seasons. Another place you definitely should make a reservation at! 2 Main St S, St. George, ON N0E 1N0
☕ Steve’s Tea Company & Tea Room A real family-affair, Steve’s Teas started as a loose leaf tea company and has since grown to the tea company and tea room - with four generations of family to be found working at the shop. The teas are still front and center with over 300 varieties of loose leaf tea to choose from, but they know what they are doing with afternoon tea. The traditional afternoon tea offerings can be found on their three tiered trays, and each aspect of the meal is done deliciously. Take a trip on over to Brantford to try out Steve’s Teas tea room for yourself! 505 Park Rd N #8, Brantford, ON N3R 7K8
☕ The Golden Teapot The Golden Teapot in Brantford is small but mighty. Attached to the historic Glenhyrst Art Gallery, the Golden Teapot is available by reservation only. The sun-filled solarium of the Golden Teapot makes for an ideal spot to enjoy Afternoon Tea with friends. Another traditional option with a plethora of finger sandwiches, The Golden Teapot’s offerings leave nothing to be desired. Try their Royal Kensington Tea for something a little extra!
